The neatness in this picture gives it away – it was taken at the ‘Ensemble Artisanal’ craft showroom on the Avenue Mohammed V. This craft centre is comprised of a large series of tidy shops around a courtyard with each shop representing one handicraft of Morocco from metalwork to leather to woodwork. All the shops seemed to represent a cooperative of some sort and the place reminded me of the ‘official’ government craft shops in India. The great advantage of the ‘ensemble’ however is that no-one hassles you at all, in fact for the most part you are completely ignored and free to wander round and take pictures which felt like a welcome relief. Whilst the tidiness of the workshop has a slight air of unreality about it I did see a woman at work at her loom, and adjoining the workshop was a shop full of different types of carpets but clearly not all woven there. The work was probably overpriced, but it was definitely a calmer environment than the souk nearby.
